The TA-WE Women's Wellness Initiative, an event organized by the newly formed TA-WE association, marked its inaugural edition with resounding success. The initiative, which stands for the Association of Thomas Adewumi University, College, Primary School, and the Medical Centre (TAUCPS-Women), was inaugurated on March 8th, 2024, coinciding with International Women's Day. This association aims to unite all female staff within the Thomas Adewumi organization to foster social, cultural, and educational improvements across its institutions.

The event was a gathering of female staff from Thomas Adewumi University, Thomas Adewumi International College, Thomas Adewumi Nursery and Primary School, and the Oko Medical Centre. It began with a warm welcome and an introductory overview of the program by the association's Coordinator, Mrs. Oluwadamilola Ezekiel. She set the tone for the day, emphasizing the importance of unity and wellness among the female staff.

Following Mrs. Ezekiel's introduction, the Treasurer, Mrs. A.A. Babafemi, elaborated on the vision and mission of TA-WE. She highlighted the significance of prioritizing health and well-being, which she described as the foundation of strength and resilience. Mrs. Babafemi's speech was inspiring and empowering, focusing on self-care, mental and physical health, and the importance of embracing individuality. She encouraged the attendees to believe in their worth and value, to speak up, and to support one another in breaking down barriers and creating a brighter future.

Key Points Highlighted by Mrs. Babafemi:

  • Self-Care and Self-Love: Prioritizing personal health and well-being.
  • Physical and Mental Health: Emphasizing the importance of maintaining both.
  • Embracing Uniqueness: Celebrating individuality and personal strengths.
  • Empowerment through Education: Encouraging continuous personal growth.
  • Supportive Relationships: Building a strong community and support system.
  • Advocacy: Speaking up for oneself and others.
  • Belief in Self-Worth: Recognizing and affirming one's intrinsic value.

"Remember, our worth and value come from within, and don't let anyone make us feel otherwise," Mrs. Babafemi reiterated, urging all women to support and uplift each other.

The highlight of the event was a comprehensive health talk by Mrs. D.O. Omotosho, a lecturer from the Faculty of Nursing Sciences. Her presentation, titled "Care of the Breast," covered essential topics such as the anatomy of the breast, steps for conducting breast self-examinations, and various conditions and disorders affecting breast health. Mrs. Omotosho's talk was informative and practical, providing the attendees with valuable knowledge on maintaining breast health.

Summary of Mrs. Omotosho's Health Talk:

  • Introduction to Breast Anatomy: Understanding the structure and function of the breast.
  • Steps for Breast Self-Examination: Detailed instructions on how to perform self-examinations.
  • Patterns in Breast Self-Examination: Recognizing normal and abnormal patterns.
  • Conditions Affecting Breast Health: Identifying common disorders and their implications.
  • Recommendations: Practical advice for maintaining breast health.

Following Mrs. Omotosho's presentation, there was an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing participants to engage directly with the speaker and clarify any doubts or concerns.

Next, the event transitioned into a "Family Meeting." This session was designed to hear from the members of the association, gather their contributions, feedback, and suggestions for the association's future activities and improvements. It was a productive segment where attendees shared their thoughts on how to strengthen the association and make it more effective.

The meeting concluded with a short announcement and a heartfelt vote of thanks. This was followed by a side attraction where participants had the opportunity to check their vital signs, including blood pressure and blood sugar levels, ensuring that everyone left the event with a clearer understanding of their health status.

The TA-WE Women's Wellness Initiative was a testament to the commitment of Thomas Adewumi University and its affiliated institutions to the well-being and empowerment of their female staff. By fostering a supportive and educational environment, the initiative aims to create a more equitable and just society, where women's health and empowerment are prioritized.

As the event concluded, there was a palpable sense of unity and empowerment among the attendees. The TA-WE association is poised to continue its mission, ensuring that every female staff member at Thomas Adewumi University, College, Nursery and Primary School, and the Medical Centre is supported, educated, and empowered to lead a healthy and fulfilling life.
