Engr. Dr. Johnson Bamidele Olorunsola Adewumi FNSE is an alumnus of the University of Lagos (1973-1976) and Imperial College of Science & Technology of the University of London (1978-1983).

He graduated as the best student in the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Lagos in June 1976. He obtained a Master of Science in Engineering Hydrology in 1989 and a Ph.D in 1983 in Civil Engineering from the University of London.

He worked in the Nigerian economy's Public and Private Sectors over the past 45 years, the acquired experience of Engr.  Adewumi FNSE spans the broad field of Engineering Design, Policy formulation, Construction, Research, and Teaching. He worked on many large water resources projects in various capacities. Among his most recent professional work is the Engineering Design and Construction management of the 700MW Zungeru Hydropower Project completed in 2023, the Multi-purpose Gurara Water Transfer Project which was completed in 2014, and the Engineering Design of the 3,050MW Mambilla Hydropower Project.

 

Furthermore, he served on several Technical Commissions and Advisory Committees for Civil Engineering Construction Projects and Water Resources Planning.  He also served as a Water Resources expert for bilateral and multilateral organizations which include Niger River Basin Development Authority, Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission for Co-operation, Lake Chad Basin Commission, UNESCO – IHP, and World Meteorological Organization.  His work with other experts formed the basis of the Water Sharing Agreement between the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Niger for the Four River Basin common to the two countries in 1986.

 

Other major large Dams and Irrigation Projects in Nigeria in which Engr. Dr. Adewumi FNSE played leading roles in the planning, Design, and Construction include Jibiya Dam, Irrigation Cum Water Supply Project, Swashi Dam and Irrigation Project, Goronyo Dam and Kampe Dam and Irrigation Project, Middle and Lower Ogun Projects and Gurara Multi-purpose Water Transfer scheme. 

 

On the International Scene, he served as Hydrological Rapporteur for World Meteorological Organisation – RA 1 between 1984 and 1986. He served as a Water Resources Expert for the Food and Agricultural Organization in 1987. He has many published works in International Journals such as the Journal of Hydropower and Dams, the International Committee on Irrigation and Drainage, and the Water Resources Journal.

 

Engr. Dr. Adewumi FNSE founded Decrown West Africa Company Limited in 1989 and developed the Company to become one of the leading Engineering Consulting Companies in Nigeria in the fields of Civil Engineering, Hydropower, and Water Resources.  In 1994, he expanded the scope of his Engineering Company to include Construction and Electromechanical works by the incorporation of Construction Products Nigeria Limited.

 

Engr. Johnson B.O. Adewumi FNSE was conferred with the title of Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. He is currently the President of the Nigerian National Committee on Large Dams (NICOLD). He authored several technical papers published by the International Committee on Large Dams. The most recent of his papers was titled A Storytelling, Dam Stability Issue and Design Review, a plea for early empirical geological/geotechnical assessment of adverse conditions in foundation. This paper was presented at the Proceedings of the ICOLD 2019 Symposium in Ottawa Canada in June 2019.

 

He was appointed Chancellor of Kwara State University in March 2020. He founded Thomas Adewumi University Oko which was licensed to operate as one of the Private Universities in Nigeria in April 2021

 

Community Work.

Engr. Dr. Adewumi FNSE served as National President of Oko Development Association for a period of Eight Years ( 1993 to 2000). In 1997, Dr. JBO Adewumi founded Thomas Adewumi International College, Oko, and built a Primary School for the Oko Community called Prime Time Nursery and Primary School. In May 2006, Dr. JBO Adewumi FNSE built and commissioned a 37-bed Hospital complete with modern Equipment called Oko Medical Centre. He offers scholarships for Primary, secondary, and University education for many and set up seven cooperative societies to provide loans for commercial activities in Oko Community. In 2007, Dr. JBO Adewumi together with his wife Gloria Oluwakemi started an NGO called Rural Youth Empowerment Project. The aims of the NGO are: to train Nigerian youths in rural areas to live better lives, to focus on skill acquisition, adopt healthy lifestyles, and promote self-employment. The programme has benefitted many people in Irepodun Local Government Area including serving NYSC members. In October 2008, the  Oloko of Oko, Oba Victor Olawuyi, installed Engr. Dr. Adewumi FNSE and his wife Dr. Mrs Gloria Adewumi the first Asiwaju and Yeye Asiwaju respectively of Oko-Irese Land in recognition of their services to the Oko-Irese  Community.
