The Faculty of Nursing Sciences at Thomas Adewumi University (TAU) was originally part of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences but gained full Faculty status on September 4, 2023, following its elevation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. This advancement reflects the Faculty’s growth and the University's commitment to advancing the field of nursing education, research, and community service.
The Faculty offers a Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.N.Sc.) degree through its four core departments: Medical and Surgical Nursing, Maternal and Child Health Nursing, Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, and Public Health and Community Health Nursing. These departments equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring they are well-prepared to contribute effectively to interdisciplinary healthcare teams and deliver patient-centered care.
The Faculty’s key educational objectives include fostering collaborative practice, encouraging research and innovation, and providing students with a holistic understanding of patient care. The Faculty also places a strong emphasis on professional development, supporting students throughout their careers with continuous learning opportunities.
The B.N.Sc. program is fully accredited by both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. This accreditation, coupled with the impressive 100% pass rate of 500-level students in their pre-council exams, attests to the quality of the program. The Faculty is also heavily involved in community outreach, working with the Nursing Students Association to promote health awareness. For instance, the Faculty hosted its first Nurses Week in May 2024 to celebrate the nursing profession and discuss issues affecting nurses.
In terms of research, the Faculty encourages student participation, with 300- and 400-level students contributing to public health projects such as the Pouring Out Health Equity Initiative’s Maternal and Child Health project in Kwara State. These research initiatives provide students with valuable real-world experience while addressing significant health challenges.
The Faculty also prioritizes faculty development. Mrs. Arosanyin Omolara, a faculty member, was accepted into the Ph.D. Nursing program at the University of Ibadan in July 2024, a testament to the Faculty’s emphasis on scholarly growth.
Under the leadership of Dr. Modupe Aina, the Acting Dean, the Faculty continues to build on its academic foundation and pursue excellence in education and healthcare service. With full support from the University, including the engagement of adjunct lecturers, the Faculty is strengthening its teaching capacity and academic offerings.
Looking ahead, the Faculty of Nursing Sciences remains dedicated to advancing nursing education, enhancing research, and making a significant impact on healthcare outcomes. Its future goals include expanding academic opportunities, fostering innovation, and continuing to provide the highest quality education to students. Through its strong academic structure, leadership, and community engagement, the Faculty is well-positioned to contribute to the healthcare profession at large.
