Thomas Adewumi University Auditorium

The third-anniversary lecture at Thomas Adewumi University (TAU) was graced by an enlightening keynote address from Prof. Hussein O.B. Oloyede. The event, held at the University East Campus Auditorium, featured a comprehensive citation of Prof. Oloyede’s illustrious career, read by Mr. Lukman Bello. Prof. Oloyede, a native of Offa in Kwara State, is a distinguished Professor of Biochemistry with over 40 years of experience, including more than 25 years as a professor. His impressive career encompasses significant academic and administrative roles, including pioneering Vice-Chancellor positions at Fountain University, Osogbo, and Summit University, Offa.

With over 400 publications and numerous awards, Prof. Oloyede is an authority in Food and Nutritional Biochemistry, anti-oxidant research, and more. His extensive experience includes serving as an external examiner for various Universities globally and active membership in multiple professional bodies.

Taking the stage after his citation, Prof. Oloyede addressed critical issues facing private universities. He began by categorizing private university ownership into corporate, faith-based, and individual, expressing his satisfaction that TAU embodies corporate and individual ownership.

Prof. Oloyede’s opening statements set a reflective tone: "To be informed is to be transformed; to be uninformed is to be deformed," "Only those who mind history make history," and "Everything outstanding has its roots in understanding."

He elaborated on the evolution of private universities in Nigeria, highlighting their positive contributions such as stable academic calendars, high staff-student ratios, research breakthroughs, entrepreneurship skills, positive character moulding, and prudent fund utilization. However, he did not shy away from discussing challenges like enrolment quality, staff quality, administration standards, academic standards, and emerging technologies. He urged TAU to leverage the positives while addressing the negatives.

Prof. Oloyede offered several recommendations for private universities:

  1. Governance: Respect the law upon which the University is established.
  2. Funding: Vigorously pursue major income sources.
  3. Welfare: Prioritize staff welfare.
  4. Strategic Planning: Develop strategic plans and conduct SWOT analyses.
  5. Utilize Platforms: Take advantage of all available platforms and committees.

He concluded with words of wisdom, encouraging the Founder/Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, staff, and students to strive for continued success.

In appreciation of his insightful presentation, the Founder and Chancellor of TAU, Engr. Dr. Johnson Adewumi, presented Prof. Oloyede with an appreciation award, marking a memorable end to the event.

Thomas Adewumi University continues to celebrate its milestones with an unwavering commitment to academic excellence and societal impact, looking forward to a future filled with growth and achievements.
