In its dedication to preparing students for success beyond academia, Thomas Adewumi University (TAU) once again demonstrated its commitment by hosting an enlightening workshop on Research and Project Writing. The event, organized as part of TAU's Career Programme, was led by Dr. Adekemi T. Dahunsi, Director of Research, Innovations, and Product Development (DRIPDEV), who brought her expertise to the fore in guiding students through the intricacies of research and project composition, providing valuable insights into the world of academic research and effective project writing.
Dr. Dahunsi commenced the session by illuminating the essence of research, defining it as an objective, systematic, and scientific investigation aimed at understanding phenomena through data collection, analysis, and interpretation. She outlined key components of effective research, providing students with a foundational understanding crucial for their academic and professional journeys. Following this introduction, the Director transitioned to research paper writing, outlining its goals: expanding knowledge within a specific field, critically evaluating existing literature, presenting original research findings, and tackling specific problems or questions. She then explored various types of research papers, including research abstracts, research articles, and project writing.
Delving deeper into the intricacies of project writing, Dr. Dahunsi elucidated its significance as a means to not only summarize original research but also to contribute to expanding knowledge in specific fields. She underscored the importance of crafting projects that resonate beyond the classroom, urging students to strive for work that is publishable and impactful on a broader scale.
Throughout the workshop, she navigated students through the structural framework of a project, delineating sections such as the title page, abstract, introduction, literature review, methods/methodology, results, discussion of findings, conclusions/recommendations, bibliography/list of references, and appendices. This comprehensive breakdown provided students with a roadmap for effective project composition, ensuring clarity and coherence in their scholarly endeavors.
Addressing a critical concern in academic writing, Dr. Dahunsi highlighted the perils of plagiarism, categorically denouncing it as intellectual property theft. She elucidated various strategies to evade plagiarism, emphasizing the importance of proper citation and attribution of sources. Encouraging students to uphold academic integrity, she underscored the necessity of referencing work accurately both within the text and in the reference list.
In her closing remarks, she reiterated the imperative of ethical scholarship, urging students to uphold principles of honesty and originality in their academic pursuits. With the guidance provided in the workshop, students are equipped not only with the technical skills but also with the ethical awareness necessary for success in their chosen fields and future endeavors.
The Research and Project Writing workshop, spearheaded by Dr. Adekemi T. Dahunsi, stands as a testament to TAU's unwavering commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals primed for success in the real world. As the graduating class of 2024 embarks on their academic and professional journeys, they are equipped with the tools and mindset essential for making meaningful contributions to society.
