The IndabaX Nigeria 2023 breakout session commenced with two captivating sessions held consecutively in two different rooms "Hugging Face and You: A Hands-on Journey into ML and NLP Development" led by Steven Kolawole, and "Data Ethics Session" facilitated by Kingsley Owadara and Dorcas Tsebee, provided the participants with valuable insights into machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and the ethical considerations surrounding data usage.

Hugging Face and You: A Hands-on Journey into ML and NLP Development by Steven Kolawole.

Steven Kolawole, ML Research Engineer, led an interactive session on Hugging Face, an open-source library for Machine Learning and Natural language processing tasks. With a focus on practical learning, participants of this group were taken on a journey through the fundamentals of ML and NLP development. Steven Kolawole provided hands-on guidance, demonstrating how to utilize Hugging Face’s tools and models effectively. Participants were equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to embark on their ML and NLP projects, fostering a deeper understanding of the latest advancements in these fields.

Data Ethics Session by Kingsley Owadara and Dorcas Tsebee.

The ethical implications of data consumption have grown in significance at a time when data is a key component of technology. The Tech Policy Analysts, Kingsley Owadara and Dorcas Tsebee presented a discussion on data ethics that covered the moral obligations and difficulties that come with using data-driven technology. Through thought-provoking discussions, the session explored topics such as modeling, consent, algorithm, and fairness in data collection, storage, and analysis. Attendees gained valuable insights into the ethical implications of data usage and learned practical strategies for implementing responsible and ethical data practices in their organizations.

The breakout sessions fostered a collaborative environment, encouraging participants to actively engage with the session leaders and fellow attendees. The sessions not only provided technical knowledge but also instilled a sense of ethical responsibility when working with data and technology. Participants had the opportunity to network, share ideas, and gain valuable insights from the speakers.
