Physiotherapy

 PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAM

The programme is intended to develop graduates who are effective communicators, critical thinkers, and skilled at integrating evidence into practice. Graduates will demonstrate excellence in diagnosis, intervention, consultation, teaching and administration, and are effective at working with patients across the lifespan and the continuum of care.

The philosophy involves training and production of highly knowledgeable and skilled physiotherapists who will continue to search for more knowledge and professional skill and apply the same for treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, health promotion and other health needs of the patients and the community using physiotherapy modalities

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The specific objectives are to:

  1. Produce graduates with adequate theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to offer necessary rehabilitation, medical, sporting and primary health care services.
  2. Train competent physiotherapists who are capable of providing evidence-based physiotherapy services for effective team work.
  3. Produce Physiotherapists who are adaptable to knowledge, reflective and service-oriented to improve health care delivery.
  4. Train professionals with a sense of commitment to patients and the profession at all times.
  5. Produce personnel who can acquire knowledge in health policies, health management, global health issues and socio-cultural health issues. 

Some other specific objectives are to produce Physiotherapist that will:

  1. Be able to work in Hospitals, Rehabilitation facilities and other Health Establishments as members of the Health Team; in Physiotherapy Training Institutions, Research Centres and other Academic environments after undergoing relevant postgraduate training; in Sports, Physical Fitness and Health promotion Facilities; and in Industrial workplace and other occupational environments.
  2. Evaluate physical ailments and disabilities, plan and carry out a programme of treatment according to the patient’s clinical state.
  3. Recognize the role of the Physiotherapist in Health Care delivery in the community and in the Health Team.
  4. Participate in clinical research with others as a means of further study and professional enhancement.
  5. Acquire, develop and maintain rapport with professional colleagues, patients, their relatives and members of the Health Care Team.
  6. Acquire a sense of commitment to patients and the profession at all times.
  7. Acquire knowledge in health policies, health management, global health issues and socio-cultural health issues.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Direct Entry

At least two GCE ‘A’ Level passes in Chemistry, Physics and Biology Or its equivalents Plus UTME requirements.

 

B.Sc. (not less than second class honours) in a related course.

UTME

Candidates must have at least 5 credit passes in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English Language at not more than two sittings

UTME subjects:

English Language, Biology, Chemistry and Physics 

Note: Transition to DPT 

Candidates who hold the Bachelor of Physiotherapy (B.PT.) or Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation (BMR) in Physiotherapy degrees wishing to obtain the DPT may join DPT at 500 level. However, such BPT or BMR candidate who holds a 3rd class degree or less than 2.40 of CGPA may be considered for admission to join at the 400 level.
